The .aif extension is the 3-character DOS/Windows alias for the full .aiff extension — Audio Interchange File Format, Apple’s 1988 uncompressed audio container. Just like the .htm vs .html split, .aif arose because early Windows could not handle four-character extensions on FAT filesystems. Both extensions point to identical files: a big-endian PCM sound wrapped in IFF chunks.
Use the .aif extension when you need compatibility with legacy Windows workflows or when an older tool complains about .aiff. Pro Tools, Logic Pro, and every audio editor treat them identically. Modern Apple systems use .aiff by default; Windows tools sometimes default to .aif for no reason other than historical inertia.
