WIE DAS
FORMAT DFF ENTSTAND.
DFF — DSD Interchange File Format — is DSF’s older sibling. Philips and Sony introduced SACD (Super Audio CD) in 1999 using Direct Stream Digital 1-bit audio at 2.8 MHz. Philips standardized DFF around 2001 as a container for delivering SACD masters to pressing plants. Unlike Sony’s later DSF (2005), DFF has no native metadata support and no streaming tricks — it’s a pure bitstream wrapper.
DFF is the format SACD mastering engineers use when they receive files from studios. A DFF file of a full album runs 2-6 GB depending on DSD rate. Consumer users who rip SACDs typically end up with DFF files; audiophile communities argue about whether DFF or DSF is better for archival (the answer is: it doesn’t matter, the audio content is identical).
WISSENSWERTES UND
INTERESSANTE FAKTEN.
DFF is older than DSF — Philips standardized it before Sony's 2005 DSF format with metadata.
SACD mastering engineers receive DFF files from studios and burn them to hybrid SACD/CD discs.
DFF has no native metadata support — the format is pure bitstream.
Ripping an SACD typically produces DFF files; conversion to DSF adds metadata compatibility.
The "dff" and "dsf" extensions are interchangeable in audio terms — the container format differs, the 1-bit DSD audio is identical.

DFF (DSD Interchange File) is an audio Dateiformat used to store sound recordings — music, voice, podcasts, sound effects. The Format defines how the audio samples are komprimiert (or stored raw), what Bitrates are unterstützt, und how metadata wie title, artist, album, und cover art is embedded. It is part des audio Dateien family.
VLC, foobar2000, und the default media players auf Windows und macOS handle DFF natively. On mobile, iOS Music und Android media apps vary in their support — popular Formate work everywhere; niche ones may need a dedicated app. If playback fails auf einem device, umwandelnd to MP3 oder AAC Normalerweise solves it.
Upload the DFF to KaijuConverter und pick MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, oder any other target. Our FFmpeg pipeline decodes the audio und re-encodes zum target Format at sensible default Bitrates (VBR ~190 kbps für music, 96 kbps für speech). Metadata und cover art travel mit the audio where both Formate support them.
DFF can be verlustbehaftet oder verlustfrei depending auf dem specific variant. verlustbehaftet variants (smaller files) discard some audio detail während Komprimierung in ways tuned to be inaudible; verlustfrei variants preserve every sample exactly aber produce larger files. für distribution, verlustbehaftet at hoch Bitrate is Standard; für archival, verlustfrei wins.
