The .mpg extension is the DOS-era twin of .mpeg — both identify the same MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Program Stream container. The difference is purely cosmetic: back when file extensions were limited to 3 characters on Windows (before Windows 95’s long filename support), software used .mpg. Modern OSes support both interchangeably.
You mostly encounter .mpg files today as security camera exports, legacy DVD rips, and VHS-to-digital conversions. The format is stable and universal but aging; virtually no new content is produced as .mpg.
