RAR — Roshal ARchive — was created in 1993 by Russian engineer Eugene Roshal and is still developed by his company win.rar GmbH. Unlike ZIP the format is proprietary, though Roshal published the decompression algorithm so anyone could read RAR files freely. The format's strength was always compression ratio: at every version bump, RAR squeezed files 5–15% tighter than ZIP, aided by a solid archive mode that compresses multiple files as one continuous stream.
RAR is distributed via the classic WinRAR shareware ritual: a 40-day trial that famously never actually stops working. This quirk made WinRAR one of the most-installed utilities on Windows from the late 1990s onward, and RAR files remain a common format for large downloads, game mods, and file-sharing releases.
