VOC — Creative Voice File — shipped with Creative Labs’ Sound Blaster Pro in 1991, the audio card that made the PC a multimedia machine. Sound Blaster’s bundled microphone recording software saved in VOC. For most of the early 1990s every sampled sound effect in DOS games (Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, early Sierra and LucasArts titles) was stored as a .voc file — a header describing sample rate and encoding, followed by raw PCM or ADPCM audio blocks.
When Windows 95 and WAV took over PC audio, VOC faded. It survives primarily in retro-gaming and DOS-preservation communities; DOSBox plays it natively, and tools like SoX can convert it to modern formats. Creative’s Sound Blaster line continues as a brand but the VOC format ended commercially around 1995.
