COMMENT ZIP
A VU LE JOUR.

ZIP was created by programmer Phil Katz in 1989 as the successor to the ARC archive format, whose author, SEA, had sued Katz for distributing his compatible "PKARC" implementation. Katz responded by designing a fundamentally better format — ZIP was both faster and compressed tighter — and released the specification publicly. It rapidly replaced ARC as the standard archive format on DOS, Windows, and eventually the world.

Thirty-five years later ZIP is embedded into every major operating system, shipped as the transport layer for Office documents (DOCX is a ZIP), eBooks (EPUB is a ZIP), and Java applications (JAR is a ZIP). The format's combination of simplicity, resilience, and first-day OS support has made it effectively immortal.

DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, EPUB, JAR, APK and ODT are all ZIP archives — rename one to .zip and you can browse inside.

Phil Katz named the format "ZIP" because he wanted it to sound fast.

The Central Directory at the end of a ZIP file is an index — ZIP files are parsed back-to-front.

A ZIP can contain a ZIP that contains a ZIP — "zip bombs" are tiny files that unpack to petabytes.

ZIP supports password encryption but the legacy cipher (ZipCrypto) is trivially breakable; use AES-256.

No built-in error correction — a single bad byte can kill the Central Directory.
