PowerPoint 1.0 shipped in April 1987 for the Macintosh, built by a small startup called Forethought. It was the first presentation-focused software aimed at non-specialists — replacing overhead transparencies and 35mm slide trays. Three months later Microsoft acquired Forethought for $14 million and rebranded it as Microsoft PowerPoint. .ppt was the native binary format throughout that whole lineage: Mac 1.0 (1987) through Windows Office 2003.

In 2007 Microsoft swapped in .pptx (XML-based) as default. Legacy .ppt files still circulate — corporate archives, academic backups, that one consultant who loves Office 2003 — and every modern presentation app still reads them. But nobody writes new .ppt files by choice.

PowerPoint originally shipped as "Presenter" but lawyers found a trademark conflict, so it was renamed days before launch.

The iconic "bullet-point deck" aesthetic was shaped by PowerPoint's 1987 default template — and criticized by NASA after the 2003 Columbia disaster for oversimplifying engineering data.

Embedded animations in .ppt are stored as a cryptic sequence of "animation tags" in the binary stream.

Thumbnail previews inside .ppt files are JPEGs — useful for extracting slide snapshots without rendering them.

The default slide size in Office 2003 was 720×540 px; 16:9 widescreen did not become default until Office 2013.
