背景と歴史。
ICNS — Apple Icon Image — shipped with Mac OS X 10.0 in March 2001 as the replacement for the classic Mac OS icon family. Where Windows had packed all icon sizes into .ico, Mac OS 9 used a clunky resource-fork system that was hostile to email and the internet. ICNS was Mac OS X’s solution: a single file holding every icon size the OS might need (16, 32, 48, 128, 256, 512, 1024 px) with alpha transparency and, on Retina systems, @2x variants at doubled resolution.
Every .app bundle on macOS contains at least one ICNS in its Resources folder — that’s the icon Finder, Dock, and Cmd-Tab display. Developers ship ICNS with their Swift apps, Catalyst ports, and Xcode projects. Outside macOS the format is mostly unused; Windows sticks with ICO, Linux with PNG.

ICNS files can include up to 11 different icon sizes (16 through 1024 px) with separate @2x Retina variants.
The format uses a chunk structure with 4-character IDs — is32 for 16×16, il32 for 32×32, ic04 for 512×512, etc.
macOS stores its built-in app icons in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ as .icns files.
Apple deprecated the old ".icns-in-resource-fork" format in Mac OS X; now every icon lives as a regular disk file.
