ASS — Advanced SubStation Alpha — is the subtitle format that emerged from the anime fansubbing scene in 2002-2004. It extends SSA (SubStation Alpha, 1996) with per-character animation, rotations, outlines, drop shadows, font positioning, color gradients, and karaoke timing. If you have ever watched anime with stylized song lyrics karaoke-highlighting as they’re sung, that was an ASS file at work.
Aegisub, the dominant subtitle editor for ASS files, is the standard tool of anime fansub groups worldwide. The format found its way into mainstream streaming in the 2010s: Crunchyroll uses ASS internally for some releases, Netflix uses it for some anime titles, and every Matroska container can carry ASS as a soft-subtitle track. For anyone serious about subtitle typography, ASS is the only game in town.
