DOCX is the XML-based successor to the legacy binary .doc format that ruled office work from 1983. When Microsoft shipped Office 2007 they also shipped "Office Open XML" — a zipped bundle of XML files describing the document structure, styles, and content. The goal was interoperability and smaller files: the new format compressed about 75% better than the old binary .doc.
ECMA standardized Office Open XML as ECMA-376 in 2006 and ISO followed in 2008 (ISO/IEC 29500). Despite public debate about whether Microsoft's variant or the ODF alternative should win, DOCX became ubiquitous — every modern word processor, from LibreOffice to Google Docs to Apple Pages, reads and writes it.

A .docx file is actually a ZIP archive — rename it to .zip and you can browse its XML guts.
Inside, document.xml holds the text; styles.xml holds formatting; media/ holds embedded images.
The OOXML specification is over 6,000 pages — one of the longest ISO standards ever ratified.
Microsoft Word can open a DOCX file that is technically invalid XML, silently repairing it.
The "track changes" feature stores every edit in a separate XML namespace inside the document.

- Macros and embedded scripts make older .docm variants a common malware vector.
- Complex layouts with floating objects often reflow unpredictably.
- Version compatibility matters — Word 2007 cannot open some Word 2019 features cleanly.
