DSF — DSD Stream File — was designed by Sony in 2005 as a file container for their Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio technology. DSD underpinned Super Audio CD (SACD), the 1999 optical disc that was Sony and Philips’ high-end counter to DVD-Audio. Where PCM digital audio encodes each sample as a multi-bit number (16, 24, 32 bits per sample), DSD uses one-bit samples at 2.8 MHz or higher — a stream of 1s and 0s that directly represent pulse-density modulation of the original waveform.
Audiophiles love DSD on the argument that it more faithfully models analog audio than any PCM rate. Critics note that SACD failed commercially (CDs and MP3s won), DSD requires specialized DACs, and blind listening tests consistently fail to distinguish DSD from well-produced 24-bit/96 kHz PCM. Despite those arguments, DSF files from SACD rips populate high-end audiophile libraries, and premium streaming services (Tidal MAX, Qobuz Sublime) offer DSD downloads to people willing to pay for the experience.
