GIF — Graphics Interchange Format — was released by CompuServe in 1987 to send small images over dial-up bulletin boards. It was the first format designed explicitly for online distribution, and its combination of 8-bit indexed color, LZW compression, and a single file containing multiple frames made it the default image format of the early web.
GIF's animation support is the reason it survived. While PNG and JPEG long since surpassed it on technical merit, the animated GIF remained the internet's universal container for short reaction loops, memes, and demos — a role it holds even today, despite newer alternatives like WebP, APNG, and short MP4.
