Sobre os arquivos TS

MPEG Transport Stream

FORMATO TS.

1995
2026

TS — MPEG Transport Stream — was ratified in 1995 as part of the MPEG-2 systems standard (ISO/IEC 13818-1). Where MPEG Program Streams were designed for reliable storage media like DVDs, Transport Streams were designed for error-prone broadcast channels: 188-byte packets, continuous sync markers, and built-in error correction. Every satellite, cable, terrestrial, and IPTV digital broadcast on Earth uses Transport Streams as its delivery container.

Standalone .ts files appear in two contexts today: (1) PVR recordings from set-top boxes like TiVo, Dreambox, and most smart TVs, and (2) HLS streaming — Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming segments each video chunk as a small .ts file delivered over HTTPS. YouTube, Twitch, Netflix, and most live-video CDNs use HLS-over-TS internally, meaning TS packets carry more video traffic worldwide in 2026 than any other container.

CURIOSIDADES E
FATOS INTERESSANTES.

01

Every TS packet is exactly 188 bytes — a number chosen in 1995 to evenly divide satellite downlink frames and accommodate error-correction overhead.

02

Apple HLS streaming segments each chunk as a .ts file — YouTube, Twitch, and most live streaming use TS under the hood.

03

All digital TV broadcasts on Earth (DVB, ATSC, ISDB) deliver content as MPEG Transport Streams over the air.

04

TiVo, Dreambox, and most modern DVR / smart TV recordings save to .ts files natively.

05

The successor format fMP4 (fragmented MP4) is gradually replacing TS for HLS because it enables lower latency — but TS still dominates.

VANTAGENS E
LIMITAÇÕES.

Vantagens

  • Designed for noisy channels — packet-level error correction.
  • Multi-program: one TS can carry several TV channels.
  • Native format for all digital TV broadcasts and HLS streaming.
  • Streaming-first: no need to download whole file to start playing.
  • 30+ years of stable, deployed infrastructure.

Limitações

  • Packet overhead (~3% vs Program Stream).
  • Seek index is implicit — requires scanning for random access.
  • Multiple audio/subtitle selection requires parsing PMT (Program Map Tables).
  • fMP4 is gradually replacing TS for modern low-latency streaming.

Perguntas frequentes sobre TS

Perguntas frequentes

TS (MPEG Transport Stream) is a video container formato that bundles one ou more video streams, audio tracks, e optional subtitles em a single file. The container formato determines how metadata is organised e which codecs can live inside; the visual quality itself depende de the codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) em vez de the TS wrapper. It is part of the video arquivos family.

VLC, MPV e PotPlayer reproduzir nearly every TS arquivo on desktop. Browser support varies: moderno Chromium, Firefox e Safari reproduzir common containers via the HTML5 <video> tag, mas niche TS variants may fail. If a device refuses your TS, converter to MP4 com our TS to MP4 converter para universal playback.

Upload your TS to KaijuConverter e pick MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, ou any other target. Our pipeline uses FFmpeg under the hood e stream-copies when codecs are compatível (no quality loss) ou transcodes at alta-quality defaults otherwise. Conversion runs server-side; both arquivos delete within two hours.

Only when the target requires re-encoding. If the codecs inside TS match what the target container supports, FFmpeg stream-copies the streams e the output is bit-identical para o source. Transcoding uses transparente quality defaults (CRF 20–23 H.264) e produces output indistinguishable de the original at normal viewing distance.
