A história

COMO NASCEU O
FORMATO VOB.

1997
1999
2005

VOB — Video OBject — is the container the DVD Forum chose for DVD-Video when the format launched commercially in 1997. Every DVD’s VIDEO_TS folder contains a series of .vob files, each up to 1 GB, holding MPEG-2 video, up to 8 AC-3 audio tracks, subtitle streams, and menu navigation commands. A typical feature film spans 3-7 VOB files.

Extracting or editing VOBs became a cottage industry during the DVD piracy era (1999-2005). Tools like DVD Decrypter, Shrink, and HandBrake could "rip" a DVD by reading VOBs (after breaking CSS copy protection) and re-encoding to DivX/XviD AVI. Today VOBs appear mostly as intermediate files when someone rips a physical DVD to digital — a dying occurrence now that streaming has largely replaced disc purchase.

CURIOSIDADES E
FATOS INTERESSANTES.

01

Every DVD's VIDEO_TS folder contains one or more .vob files — each capped at 1 GB to match FAT32 filesystem limits of the 1997 era.

02

A 2-hour DVD movie is typically split across 3 VOB files: 1 GB + 1 GB + ~800 MB.

03

VOBs are technically MPEG Program Streams with a DVD-specific layer on top for menus and multi-angle shots.

04

The notorious DeCSS program (1999) unlocked VOB files from CSS copy protection — the landmark DMCA court cases were about VOB decryption.

05

Modern Blu-ray replaced VOB with MPEG Transport Stream (.m2ts) in a BDMV/STREAM folder structure.

VANTAGENS E
LIMITAÇÕES.

Vantagens

  • Universal DVD support on every player ever made.
  • Carries multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and menus in one container.
  • Mature tooling ecosystem for extraction and editing.

Limitações

  • Hard 1 GB file-size cap forces multi-file splits.
  • MPEG-2 compression is 2-3× larger than modern codecs.
  • Tied to CSS copy protection — decryption was once illegal.
  • Disc-era format; streaming replaced DVDs for most users.

Perguntas frequentes sobre VOB

Perguntas frequentes

VOB (DVD Video Object) is a video container formato that bundles one ou more video streams, audio tracks, e optional subtitles em a single file. The container formato determines how metadata is organised e which codecs can live inside; the visual quality itself depende de the codec (H.264, H.265, VP9, AV1) em vez de the VOB wrapper. It is part of the video arquivos family.

VLC, MPV e PotPlayer reproduzir nearly every VOB arquivo on desktop. Browser support varies: moderno Chromium, Firefox e Safari reproduzir common containers via the HTML5 <video> tag, mas niche VOB variants may fail. If a device refuses your VOB, converter to MP4 com our VOB to MP4 converter para universal playback.

Upload your VOB to KaijuConverter e pick MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, ou any other target. Our pipeline uses FFmpeg under the hood e stream-copies when codecs are compatível (no quality loss) ou transcodes at alta-quality defaults otherwise. Conversion runs server-side; both arquivos delete within two hours.

Only when the target requires re-encoding. If the codecs inside VOB match what the target container supports, FFmpeg stream-copies the streams e the output is bit-identical para o source. Transcoding uses transparente quality defaults (CRF 20–23 H.264) e produces output indistinguishable de the original at normal viewing distance.
