lzip — .lz — was created in 2008 by Antonio Diaz Diaz as a lossless compression tool that wraps LZMA (the same algorithm powering 7-Zip and xz) in a simpler, more robust file format. Diaz’s complaint with xz: the container format is complex and allows malformed files that decompress incorrectly. lzip’s design is narrower: one stream per file, explicit CRC32 checksums, simpler header structure.
lz is a minority choice in a world dominated by xz. GNU Source-release mirrors accept both .tar.xz and .tar.lz, and some Debian tooling works with .lz files. Proponents argue lz is more trustworthy for long-term archival; pragmatists ship xz because it’s ubiquitous. The 2024 XZ backdoor (CVE-2024-3094) briefly boosted lz’s reputation since lzip was unaffected.
