JAK FORMAT WEBM
POWSTAŁ.
WebM was born out of a Google acquisition. In February 2010 Google bought On2 Technologies for $124 million, then open-sourced their VP8 video codec and paired it with Vorbis audio inside a stripped-down Matroska container. The result, announced at Google I/O 2010, was WebM — a royalty-free video format explicitly designed to compete with H.264 on the open web.
Firefox, Opera, and Chrome supported WebM from day one; Microsoft Edge followed later; Safari in 2021. VP8 was eventually superseded by VP9 (2013), and VP9 by AV1 (2018), but they all shipped inside WebM containers. YouTube uses WebM for VP9 and AV1 streams to billions of viewers. Today it is the default HTML5 <video> format for any web publisher who wants royalty-free playback.
CIEKAWOSTKI I
FAKTY.
WebM is literally a restricted subset of MKV — only VP8/VP9/AV1 video + Vorbis/Opus audio are allowed.
YouTube re-encodes every video into WebM at multiple resolutions automatically.
Google released the entire codec source under BSD license the day it launched — extremely rare for a video codec.
WebRTC video calls in browsers default to VP8 inside WebM because of the patent-free guarantee.
The Chromium, Firefox, and Opera codebases all ship libvpx for encoding VP9 — it is one of the most widely deployed video codec libraries ever.
ZALETY I
OGRANICZENIA.
Zalety
- Patent-free and royalty-free — no licensing worries for encoders.
- First-class HTML5 <video> support across browsers.
- AV1 inside WebM offers best-in-class compression (30-50% smaller than H.264).
- Low overhead — the container strips everything MKV does not need.
- Powered by battle-tested libvpx and dav1d reference decoders.
Ograniczenia
- Limited codec palette — cannot carry H.264 or HEVC streams.
- Encoding AV1 or VP9 at quality is slow.
- Hardware decoders for AV1 are still catching up on older devices.
- Professional video tools (Final Cut, Premiere) do not export WebM natively.
