WebM was born out of a Google acquisition. In February 2010 Google bought On2 Technologies for $124 million, then open-sourced their VP8 video codec and paired it with Vorbis audio inside a stripped-down Matroska container. The result, announced at Google I/O 2010, was WebM — a royalty-free video format explicitly designed to compete with H.264 on the open web.

Firefox, Opera, and Chrome supported WebM from day one; Microsoft Edge followed later; Safari in 2021. VP8 was eventually superseded by VP9 (2013), and VP9 by AV1 (2018), but they all shipped inside WebM containers. YouTube uses WebM for VP9 and AV1 streams to billions of viewers. Today it is the default HTML5 <video> format for any web publisher who wants royalty-free playback.
