Adobe Illustrator 1.0 shipped in March 1987 as Adobe’s first end-user product — and the .ai file was its native save format. The earliest AI files were actually valid EPS PostScript with some Adobe-specific extensions. That continued for a decade until Illustrator 9 (2000), when Adobe pivoted AI to a PDF-based container. Since then, an .ai file is essentially a PDF with private Illustrator metadata layered on top.
That hybrid heritage is the .ai’s superpower and its weirdness. You can rename a modern .ai to .pdf and it will open in any PDF reader with a flattened view of the artwork. Open the same file in Illustrator and you get the full editable layer stack, symbol library, and art boards. For most designers, AI is the master file; every other deliverable (PDF, EPS, SVG, PNG) is exported from it.

From Illustrator 9 (2000) onward, .ai files are actually PDF containers with Adobe private metadata — rename .ai to .pdf and it opens in Acrobat.
The format supports an arbitrary number of art boards (separate canvases) in one file — handy for multi-size design kits.
Layer, symbol, and brush data are stored in a private "AIPrivateData" dictionary that only Adobe tools fully understand.
Adobe Illustrator 1.0 shipped on a single 3.5" floppy disk and cost $495 in 1987 — about $1,300 in today’s money.
The earliest AI files from 1987-1999 were PostScript-based and are now notoriously hard to open in modern Illustrator.
