AZW3 — also called KF8, for "Kindle Format 8" — is Amazon’s second-generation ebook format, launched with the Kindle Fire in October 2011. The original AZW (2007) was a close cousin of Mobipocket’s MOBI format, which Amazon had acquired. AZW3 broke with MOBI and moved to HTML5 + CSS3 rendering inside a proprietary container, finally letting Kindle books carry fixed layouts, drop caps, embedded fonts, SVG graphics, and rich typography.

Every Kindle book purchased since 2011 has been AZW3 (or its DRM-free cousin KFX, introduced in 2015). The format is locked to Amazon’s DRM ecosystem: you buy a book, it binds to your account, and officially you cannot move it off Kindle devices. A whole cottage industry of conversion tools (Calibre with plugins) exists to extract AZW3 into portable EPUB.

AZW3 is also called "KF8" (Kindle Format 8) internally at Amazon — two names for the same file.

The format supports HTML5 + CSS3, allowing proper fixed layouts, drop caps, and typography that MOBI could not handle.

Every Kindle device since 2011 reads AZW3 natively; older Kindle DX and Kindle Keyboard need MOBI fallback.

Amazon introduced AZW3 the same month it launched the Kindle Fire — a strategic move to match iPad e-reading.

KFX, Amazon's newer 2015 format, is actually a different file extension but mostly an AZW3 successor with even stronger DRM.
