A história

COMO NASCEU O
FORMATO CIN.

1993
1994

Cineon — .cin — was Kodak’s original 1993 format for scanning film negatives at 10-bit logarithmic color. Kodak built the Cineon digital film scanner at their Rochester, NY facility; the raw output was .cin files that preserved every tonal stop from shadows to highlights as film negative saw them. Cineon was the direct ancestor of DPX — SMPTE took the Cineon format in 1994 and standardized it as SMPTE 268M DPX.

Cineon and DPX files are nearly interchangeable; DPX added metadata blocks Cineon lacked. Most modern film pipelines moved entirely to DPX or OpenEXR, but .cin files still surface in studio archives of 1990s-era scanned negatives.

CURIOSIDADES E
FATOS INTERESSANTES.

01

Cineon was Kodak's original 1993 digital film scanner format — DPX is essentially Cineon with better metadata.

02

SMPTE standardized Cineon as DPX in 1994 — the two formats are nearly byte-compatible.

03

Cineon's 10-bit logarithmic encoding preserves film tones that 8-bit linear formats clip.

04

Kodak ran the Cineon film-scanner business until 2002 before exiting — DPX inherited the mantle.

05

Photoshop's "Cineon" import filter still exists in 2026 — 33 years after the format shipped.

Limitações

  • Legacy — DPX is the modern choice.
  • No compression.
  • Niche tooling.

Perguntas frequentes sobre CIN

Perguntas frequentes

CIN (Kodak Cineon) is an image formato used to store raster graphics — a two-dimensional grid of pixels describing a picture. It is part of the raster & vector images family e designed around a specific trade-off between tamanho do arquivo, visual fidelity, e feature support (transparency, colour depth, compressão type). Photographers, web designers, e content creators choose CIN when its particular strengths match the publishing target.

Most desktop photo viewers (Windows Photos, macOS Preview, GIMP, Photoshop, Affinity Photo) abrir CIN natively. On mobile, iOS Photos e Google Photos display CIN no gallery when suportado por the OS. If the formato is rare ou new, converter to JPG ou PNG first — both are universally readable — usando our CIN to JPG ou CIN to PNG converter.

Upload the CIN to KaijuConverter e pick a target formato (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, SVG, PDF). The conversion runs in o navegador via ImageMagick e returns a baixar in seconds. No account ou installation required; both input e output delete automatically within two hours.

Depende de the task. JPG is the smallest tamanho do arquivo para photographs; PNG is sem perdas com transparência; CIN has its own niche that may favour colour depth, animation, ou codificação efficiency over one ou both of those. para the final web publish, test all three e measure tamanho do arquivo plus visible quality on real content.
