CR3 shipped in May 2018 with the Canon EOS M50, replacing CR2 after 14 years as Canon’s native raw format. The structural change is significant: where CR2 was a TIFF variant with Canon's own IFD tags, CR3 uses the ISO Base Media File Format container — the same as MP4 and HEIF. Canon also introduced C-RAW, a lossy-compressed raw variant that ships inside CR3 at 40% smaller file sizes than the full CRAW lossless.
Every Canon EOS R mirrorless body, every late-cycle DSLR since 2018, every Cinema EOS C70/C80, and every mainstream EOS M/RP/R5/R6 writes CR3. A decade-plus of CR2 archives still exists in professional libraries, but CR3 is the active format. Canon still doesn’t publish the spec — like CR2, every third-party raw processor has reverse-engineered the internal layout.
