DEB — Debian binary package — shipped in 1993 with Debian’s first release. Ian Murdock had founded Debian in August 1993 as a Linux distribution built on strict Free Software ideology, with packaging rules that prevented the tangled dependency hell that plagued early Linux distros. The .deb format is deceptively simple: an `ar` archive containing two tarballs (`control.tar.*` with package metadata and scripts, `data.tar.*` with the actual files to install) plus a `debian-binary` version marker.
Every Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Raspberry Pi OS, Kali, and PureOS system runs on DEB packages. `apt install firefox` under the hood fetches a .deb, verifies its signature, runs its preinst script, extracts files, and runs its postinst script. For 30+ years DEB has been the polished counter-example to DLL Hell — and the reason Debian’s package repositories, with their tens of thousands of curated packages, remain the standard-setter of the Linux world.
