JIRA markup is Atlassian’s wiki-style text syntax used in JIRA issues and Confluence pages. Atlassian launched JIRA in 2002 as a bug-tracker for Java projects; the markup language arose naturally to let users format issue descriptions and comments without learning HTML. Syntax includes `*bold*`, `_italic_`, `+underline+`, `-strike-`, `{code}blocks{code}`, and a handful of macros for citations and citations.
JIRA markup is rarely used outside Atlassian products, but within the Atlassian ecosystem it’s seen by tens of millions of users daily. Every Confluence page, every JIRA ticket, every Bitbucket pull-request comment starts with this syntax. A standalone .jira file would be a plaintext export or template — niche in the file-format world but a real artifact of enterprise software.
