MOV é o contêiner de vídeo nativo da Apple QuickTime desde 1991. Conceitualmente similar ao MP4 (que de fato derivou do MOV), mas otimizado para o ecossistema Apple: macOS, iOS, Final Cut Pro, ProRes. iPhone grava vídeo nativamente como MOV. Para distribuição universal, conversão para MP4 é recomendada.

QuickTime launched in December 1991 as Apple’s digital video system for Mac, and .mov was its native container. Apple’s design was ahead of its time: a single file could hold video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, sprites, and arbitrary custom tracks. That architecture was so ahead of the field that ISO borrowed it wholesale for MPEG-4 in 2001 — the MP4 container is literally the QuickTime file format with a different header.

For three decades .mov has been the lingua franca of professional video editing. Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and Avid all work natively in MOV. Broadcast pipelines, post houses, and indie filmmakers all ship MOV masters with ProRes codecs inside. Consumer-facing .mov files are rarer now as iPhones record MP4/HEVC — but professional video stays MOV.

FATOS INTERESSANTES.

The ISO MP4 container spec is literally a copy of the QuickTime file format with a new MIME type.

A single .mov file can hold dozens of tracks: multiple videos, audio languages, subtitles, chapters, even 3D geometry.

Apple ProRes (standard editing codec in pro video) lives almost exclusively inside .mov containers.

The QuickTime Player on macOS can play 28 different video formats but only writes .mov natively.

Final Cut Pro's entire render pipeline assumes .mov — you can import MP4 but output is always MOV.

Limitações

Windows and Linux need QuickTime or FFmpeg-based players to read all features.
ProRes-encoded MOVs are gigantic — 4K clips run 400-900 MB/minute.
Metadata format diverges slightly from MP4, which causes interop bugs.
Older QuickTime codecs (like Animation or DV) are considered legacy.
