INDD is the native save format of Adobe InDesign, which launched in 1999 as Adobe’s counter to QuarkXPress’ decade-long dominance of desktop publishing. InDesign was secretly code-named "K2" at Adobe — a reference to climbing the world’s second-tallest mountain to topple Quark. It worked. By 2005 InDesign had eaten most of the magazine and book-layout market.
INDD files carry every InDesign feature: master pages, paragraph and character styles, linked images, table-of-contents entries, indexes, interactive form elements, and preflight reports. The format is proprietary and binary, and has no public spec — third-party tools cannot open INDD. For sharing, InDesign exports IDML (a ZIP+XML interchange format) that other apps can read.
