CAME TO BE.

DNG — Digital Negative — was Adobe’s attempt in 2004 to rescue photography from vendor lock-in. Every camera manufacturer was shipping its own proprietary raw format (Canon’s CR2, Nikon’s NEF, Sony’s ARW…) and Adobe worried those formats would break over time as companies pivoted, got bought, or abandoned old sensors. DNG’s pitch: an open, documented, TIFF-based container that any raw file could be converted into and read decades from now.

Adoption has been lopsided. Leica, Pentax, Ricoh, Hasselblad, and a few phone manufacturers (including modern iPhones and Google Pixels via ProRAW) write DNG directly. Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji refused — they see raw format control as part of their brand. Still, DNG serves as the archival convert-to format for millions of photographers who run their NEF/CR2/ARW libraries through Adobe’s free DNG Converter to future-proof them.
