Here is the short version — AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector artwork format, based on PDF underneath. Hence the need for JPG. A AI → JPG operation is one of the simplest image jobs there is: same pixel grid, different wrapper. What genuinely changes is how lossy the codec is, whether alpha survives, and how large the final file ends up. KaijuConverter picks safe defaults for each of those and lets you override them under Advanced. Technical note: AI is Adobe Illustrator's native vector artwork format, based on PDF underneath. Compare that with JPG is the web's default lossy photograph codec, with compression tuned for natural images.

ai

Adobe Illustrator

Source format

AI (Adobe Illustrator) is a proprietary vector graphics format used by Adobe Illustrator for creating logos, illustrations, and print designs. Modern AI files are based on PDF internally and can contain both vector paths and embedded raster images.

JPEG Image

Target format

JPEG is the most widely used lossy image format on the web. It achieves small file sizes through adjustable compression, making it ideal for photographs and complex images where some quality loss is acceptable.

AI vs JPG — What's the difference?

Why convert AI to JPG

The real reason to move from AI to JPG is almost never picture quality — both raster formats store essentially the same pixels. It is about the tools downstream: which editors open the file natively, which CMSes upload it without transcoding, which social platforms accept it. Picking JPG solves those edge cases at the cost of a short conversion step.

HOW TO CONVERT
AI → JPG

1

Provide the AI

Click or drag to upload. We accept a single AI file per job, with an optional queue of additional images for batch mode.

2

Encode to JPG

The conversion decodes the AI, resolves the colour space to sRGB and writes the JPG container around the pixel data.

3

Save the JPG

The download is streamed back over HTTPS. If you uploaded multiple files, a ZIP with all JPG outputs is produced instead.

Common Use Cases

Share across platforms

Send JPG files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for AI.

Embed in documents

Drop JPG output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.

Optimize size

JPG often produces smaller files than AI for web, email and storage.

Archive & future-proof

Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.

AI vs JPG — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

AI Strengths

  • Native format for Adobe Illustrator — full fidelity for every tool, effect, and layer.
  • PDF-compatible since Illustrator 9 — any PDF reader can display a flattened preview.
  • Supports art boards, symbols, brushes, gradient meshes, and effects.
  • Professional print workflow integration — CMYK, spot colors, and color profiles are preserved.
  • Tight Creative Cloud integration with Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects.

Limitations

  • Proprietary — true editability requires Adobe Illustrator or a few niche alternatives (Affinity Designer, Inkscape partial).
  • Browsers and lightweight viewers show only the flattened PDF preview, not layers.
  • Old AI files (pre-v9) are PostScript-based and often unopenable in modern Illustrator.

JPG Strengths

  • Excellent compression ratio for photographs (10:1 or better without visible quality loss).
  • Universal support — every camera, phone, OS, and browser reads JPEG natively.
  • Adjustable quality setting balances file size against visual fidelity.
  • Embeds EXIF metadata (camera model, GPS, exposure) automatically.
  • Progressive rendering for graceful loading over slow networks.

Limitations

  • Lossy — every save degrades the image further (generation loss).
  • No transparency channel (use PNG or WebP for that).
  • Visible compression artifacts on text, sharp edges, and flat colors.

Quality & Compatibility

AI-to-JPG conversion does not change the visible content. Quality is capped by the AI decode; re-encoding a lossy source at high quality cannot recover detail that was already discarded. For archival masters, keep the original AI alongside the JPG copy.

Tips for Best Results

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the codecs involved. If both AI and JPG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If JPG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded AI exactly, but cannot recover detail that AI had already compressed away.

Often yes, especially when JPG is lossless. AI tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than JPG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.

KaijuConverter uploads over HTTPS, processes the image in an isolated container and deletes both the source and the output within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and we do not use uploads to train any model. For confidential material, the paid plan includes a data-processing agreement.
