Limitations
- File sizes are huge compared to JPEG/WebP/AVIF — often 10-30× larger.
- Not a web format — no browser displays TIFF natively.
- Ambiguous spec areas mean some TIFFs only open correctly in the tool that created them.

Quality & Compatibility
JPEG is lossy: at quality 85 (our default) the compression is visually transparent for photographs. Line art and text-heavy scans benefit more from PNG. CMYK colour spaces are converted to sRGB for web viewing.
Tips for Best Results
- Use quality 90+ if the JPG will be re-edited; 85 is fine for final publication.
- Multi-page TIFFs produce one JPG per page — expect a ZIP download rather than a single file.
- For archival masters, keep the TIFF alongside the JPG — JPEG re-saves accumulate quality loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both TIFF and JPG are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If JPG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded TIFF exactly, but cannot recover detail that TIFF had already compressed away.
JPEG is lossy, but at quality 85 the visual difference from the TIFF source is imperceptible for photographs. Line art and text scans lose slightly more and may be better served by PNG.
Often yes, especially when JPG is lossless. TIFF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than JPG's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
