Fast, secure AIF to SHN conversion. No registration required.
Opening note — AIF (AIFF) is Apple's uncompressed audio container, historically used on Mac workflows. The SHN you want is two clicks away. Moving audio from AIF into SHN is a routine job for podcasters, musicians, transcribers and anyone who needs a file to play somewhere the original would not. KaijuConverter reads the AIF once, re-encodes through FFmpeg at the bitrate you choose, and returns a polished SHN in seconds. A quick refresher — AIF (AIFF) is Apple's uncompressed audio container, historically used on Mac workflows. By contrast, SHN is an audio format with specific trade-offs between file size, bitrate flexibility, and device support.
AIFF Audio (short)
Source formatAIF is the short file extension for AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format), an uncompressed audio standard developed by Apple based on the IFF structure. It provides CD-quality lossless audio and is widely used in professional music production on macOS.
Shorten Audio
Target formatShorten (SHN) is one of the earliest lossless audio compression formats, developed by Tony Robinson. It was widely used in the live music trading community for sharing concert recordings before FLAC became the dominant lossless format.
Why convert AIF to SHN
The motivation for a AIF → SHN conversion is almost always practical: a playback device, hosting platform or editing suite that insists on SHN. The audio quality trade-off is controllable via bitrate; the compatibility win is immediate and unambiguous.
HOW TO CONVERT
AIF → SHN
Give us the AIF
Select a AIF (or several for batch). We read the header to pick decoder settings automatically.
Re-encode to SHN
The audio is decoded, optionally resampled, and re-encoded as SHN at transparent default bitrate.
Retrieve your SHN
Grab the download as soon as it is ready. Typical jobs finish in seconds for short clips.
Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send SHN files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for AIF.
Embed in documents
Drop SHN output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
SHN often produces smaller files than AIF for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
AIF vs SHN — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
AIF Strengths
- Lossless and uncompressed — bit-exact audio.
- Universal Mac compatibility.
- Compatible with every pro audio editor.
- 3-character extension for legacy Windows.
Limitations
- Large files — no compression.
- Same limitations as .aiff.
- Redundant extension in modern workflows.
SHN Strengths
- Lossless.
- Historical artifact of 1990s music trading.
- Modern decoder availability.
Limitations
- Historically royalty-encumbered.
- Obsolete for new recordings.
- FLAC offers better compression.

Quality & Compatibility
The SHN output is as good as the AIF source allows. If the AIF was encoded at 96 kbps, the SHN cannot reconstruct detail the encoder already dropped; picking a very high SHN bitrate just produces a larger file. Match SHN bitrate to the AIF quality for the best balance.
Tips for Best Results
- Sample-rate mismatches between AIF and target device (48 kHz phone output from a 44.1 kHz track) are handled automatically; no manual resampling needed.
- For audiobook delivery, match the platform spec exactly — ACX requires 192 kbps CBR 44.1 kHz stereo, for example.
- Batch-convert an album in one job so every track shares identical encoder settings and loudness normalisation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Lossy-to-lossy conversions (most combinations) re-compress the audio, which technically introduces some loss. At a 192 kbps or higher target it is inaudible on normal equipment. Lossy-to-lossless conversions freeze the existing quality but cannot improve it; lossless-to-lossy transcodes are only as good as the target bitrate you choose.
For voice content (podcasts, audiobooks, lectures) 128 kbps is indistinguishable from higher bitrates. For music, 192-256 kbps covers most listening; 320 kbps is the ceiling for SHN and the right choice for audio you plan to edit further. Above that, prefer a lossless target instead.
Yes. Title, artist, album, year and cover art travel from the AIF container to the SHN container automatically where both formats support them. If a tag field has no SHN equivalent, it is dropped silently. Use any tag editor (Mp3tag, MusicBrainz Picard) to fine-tune afterwards.
