A file that arrives with a .jfif extension catches people off guard: Windows Photo Viewer opens it fine, but the upload form on a job board, a CMS, or a print-order site rejects it because it only whitelists .jpg and .jpeg. JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format — it is the baseline standard that defines how JPEG-compressed data is wrapped, so a .jfif file already contains the exact same DCT-compressed, YCbCr-encoded bytes a .jpg file does. The mismatch is almost always cosmetic: Chrome and some Outlook/Windows builds save pasted or downloaded JPEGs with the .jfif suffix instead of .jpg. Quality & Compatibility

Because JFIF and JPG hold identical JPEG-compressed data, this conversion can be done without re-encoding, so there is no extra generation loss and no fresh blocking artifacts introduced. The 8-bit-per-channel YCbCr color, the original chroma subsampling (typically 4:2:0), and the quantization tables stay as they were. JFIF files frequently carry no EXIF block to begin with, since browsers strip it on save; if EXIF, XMP, or an embedded thumbnail is present it should carry over, though some pipelines drop the APP1 segment. There is still no transparency, no alpha channel, and no jump to higher bit depth — that is a JPEG limitation, not something the rename fixes.

If JPG is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded JFIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that JFIF had already compressed away.
