Opening note — NEF is Nikon's proprietary RAW container used across its DSLR and mirrorless bodies. The BMP you want is two clicks away. Turn a NEF image into a BMP in seconds. The two formats share the same raster DNA so the visible quality is very close; what changes is how the file is packaged, which matters for browsers, editors and CMS uploaders. KaijuConverter runs the conversion server-side and deletes both files within two hours. One more beat. NEF is Nikon's proprietary RAW container used across its DSLR and mirrorless bodies. Receiving format: BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap format — bulky but pixel-perfect.

Source format

NEF is Nikon camera RAW format with full sensor data and camera metadata.

Target format

BMP is an uncompressed raster image format native to Windows. Files are large but preserve exact pixel data with no compression artifacts. Rarely used on the web due to file size.

NEF vs BMP — What's the difference?

Why convert NEF to BMP

The real reason to move from NEF to BMP is almost never picture quality — both raster formats store essentially the same pixels. It is about the tools downstream: which editors open the file natively, which CMSes upload it without transcoding, which social platforms accept it. Picking BMP solves those edge cases at the cost of a short conversion step.

HOW TO CONVERT
NEF → BMP

1

Provide the NEF

Click or drag to upload. We accept a single NEF file per job, with an optional queue of additional images for batch mode.

2

Encode to BMP

The conversion decodes the NEF, resolves the colour space to sRGB and writes the BMP container around the pixel data.

3

Save the BMP

The download is streamed back over HTTPS. If you uploaded multiple files, a ZIP with all BMP outputs is produced instead.

Common Use Cases

Document embeds

Word, Google Docs and Pages embed BMP with correct aspect ratio; NEF may appear as a broken image icon.

Printer-friendly export

Consumer and office printers drive BMP through their print spoolers with no additional drivers.

Presentation slides

PowerPoint and Keynote treat BMP as a first-class citizen; NEF may need manual re-insertion per slide.

Online form uploads

Identity verification, job applications and legal forms often list BMP as the only accepted image format.

NEF vs BMP — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

NEF Strengths

  • Deep metadata — Active D-Lighting, Picture Control, lens profile all preserved.
  • Backward-compatible since 1999.
  • Supported by every major raw processor (Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, Darktable).
  • Embedded full-size JPEG preview.
  • Lossless or moderately compressed variants available.

Limitations

  • Proprietary — no official spec.
  • Some Nikon makernote features don't round-trip through third-party tools.
  • File sizes are large (20-60 MB typical).

BMP Strengths

  • Dead-simple format — trivially easy to read and write.
  • Lossless and uncompressed — perfect bit-exact pixel storage.
  • Universally supported in Windows applications since 1985.
  • Supports 1, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32-bit color depths.

Limitations

  • Enormous file sizes — no meaningful compression in typical use.
  • Not a web format — browsers support it but nobody serves BMPs over HTTP.
  • No metadata support (no EXIF, no ICC profile in practice).

Quality & Compatibility

NEF-to-BMP conversion does not change the visible content. Quality is capped by the NEF decode; re-encoding a lossy source at high quality cannot recover detail that was already discarded. For archival masters, keep the original NEF alongside the BMP copy.

Tips for Best Results

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the codecs involved. If both NEF and BMP are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If BMP is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded NEF exactly, but cannot recover detail that NEF had already compressed away.

Often yes, especially when BMP is lossless. NEF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than BMP's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.

KaijuConverter uploads over HTTPS, processes the image in an isolated container and deletes both the source and the output within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and we do not use uploads to train any model. For confidential material, the paid plan includes a data-processing agreement.
