XLS is a binary compound document format — Microsoft's BIFF8 (Binary Interchange File Format, revision 8) introduced with Excel 97 — that encodes rows, columns, cell values, number formats, merged cells, formulas, and multi-sheet workbooks inside a structured storage container. None of that structure maps cleanly to the open web. The most common reason someone converts XLS to HTML is precisely that: they have tabular data locked in a proprietary binary that only spreadsheet software can fully open, and they need it readable in a browser, embeddable in a web page, or shareable without requiring the recipient to have Excel. HTML tables are universally renderable, indexable by search engines, and require no plugin or licensed software to view. A secondary driver is archiving: an HMTL snapshot of a report or invoice that would otherwise decay as Excel versions change is permanently accessible through any browser built in the last two decades.

Quality & Compatibility

The conversion preserves cell text values, basic number formatting (integers, decimals, currency symbols if stored as display strings), and the row-column grid structure as an HTML table element. Cell background colors and bold or italic font styles survive in inline CSS when the converter reads the BIFF8 style records. What does not survive: formulas are flattened to their last computed value — no calculation engine exists in HTML. Merged cells require colspan and rowspan attributes and are preserved structurally but may look different depending on browser CSS defaults. Multiple worksheets within the workbook become either separate HTML files or separate table blocks; which approach a converter takes matters for navigation. Charts, embedded images, dropdown validation lists, conditional formatting rules, and VBA macros are lost entirely. XLS has no concept of semantic markup, so column headers become ordinary table cells unless the converter applies a thead element heuristically.
