8SVX — 8-bit Sampled Voice — was one of Electronic Arts’ original IFF chunk formats, shipped in 1985 with the Commodore Amiga. The Amiga’s Paula audio chip could play 8-bit mono samples at up to 28 kHz — revolutionary for home computers in 1985. Games, demos, and music trackers used 8SVX as the universal Amiga sample format. Every MOD file composer, every demoscene artist, every Shadow of the Beast musician worked with 8SVX.
Amiga commercial decline in the mid-1990s ended new 8SVX production. Today the format survives in Amiga preservation archives and retrocomputing emulator contexts. A .8svx file today is usually a sample extracted from a 1990-era MOD music track or a game audio archive. SoX and FFmpeg read it for historical purposes.
