AC-3 — Audio Compression 3, marketed as Dolby Digital — was designed by Dolby Laboratories in the early 1990s for cinema and consumer DVD audio. The first commercial deployment came in 1991 with Batman Returns’ theatrical release, which included an experimental Dolby Digital optical soundtrack. By 1995 AC-3 was the mandatory audio format for ATSC digital television in North America and DVDs worldwide.
The codec’s design is speech-aware: it perceptually models which frequencies the ear cannot hear and discards them. A 5.1 AC-3 stream at 384-448 kbps sounds cinema-quality; 640 kbps is the DVD maximum. Raw .ac3 files are rare but turn up as extracted audio tracks from DVDs, broadcast TV recordings, and legacy game cut-scenes. The successor codec E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus, 2005) is preferred for streaming, but AC-3 remains universally decodeable.
