CBZ — Comic Book ZIP — is a file-naming convention more than a format. It’s simply a ZIP archive containing image files (usually JPEGs or PNGs of comic book pages) numbered in reading order, renamed with the .cbz extension so comic readers can auto-detect them. The convention emerged around 2002-2003 in online comic-scanlation communities.

The comic-reader ecosystem built on top: ComicRack (Windows), CDisplay (the original, 2003), Comic Shelf (iOS), SimpleComic (macOS), and every e-reader’s comic mode. A .cbz is effectively the EPUB of comics: pages in order, no DRM, works everywhere. The sibling .cbr format uses RAR instead of ZIP; .cb7 uses 7z; .cbt uses TAR. All four share the same internal structure (numbered images) and can be renamed interchangeably once extracted.

TRIVIA.

A .cbz is just a ZIP — rename one to .zip and you can browse the JPEG or PNG pages directly.

CDisplay (2003) was the first dedicated comic reader — its author Elysium named the format convention that stuck.

Kindle supports CBZ on its Paperwhite and Scribe bodies — comics look sharp on E-Ink.

.cbr (RAR) and .cbz (ZIP) are functionally identical — the extension just tells your reader which decompressor to use.

DC Comics and Marvel distribute their official digital comics as proprietary formats — but fan-scanned archives live in CBZ.

Relies on alphabetical filename order — inconsistent naming breaks reading order.
No interactive features (unlike animated comics on Comixology Guided View).
