CDR is the native format of CorelDRAW, the vector illustration app from Corel Corporation in Ottawa. CorelDRAW 1.0 shipped in January 1989 on a single 3.5-inch floppy. It was the first app to offer full-color vector illustration on Windows at a consumer price point — and for most of the 1990s, CorelDRAW was the default vector tool in signage, large-format printing, and CAD-adjacent workflows where Adobe Illustrator was considered too expensive.
CDR has been through 24+ major versions, and the binary format has changed dramatically with each. A CDR from CorelDRAW 5 (1994) may not open in CorelDRAW 2025 without a pass through intermediate versions. The format is proprietary; Corel publishes no spec. Inkscape has reverse-engineered limited CDR import support, but fidelity is patchy. For sharing, CorelDRAW exports AI, SVG, and PDF.
