CAME TO BE.
LRF was the native format of Sony’s PRS-series ebook readers (2006-2012), Sony’s attempt to compete with Amazon Kindle. A .lrf file is a structured ebook container with embedded fonts, images, and pagination — Sony’s equivalent of AZW or EPUB. Sony also supported EPUB directly on PRS readers, which effectively made LRF redundant.
Sony exited the US ebook market in 2014 and ceased PRS production. LRF files still exist in archives from that era; Calibre reads them and converts to modern formats. No new content is produced as LRF in 2026.
