M2V is a raw MPEG-2 video elementary stream — video frames compressed as MPEG-2 without any container. Where .mpg and .mpeg typically carry MPEG Program Streams with video + audio multiplexed together, .m2v is video-only, without sync bytes, without audio, without timecodes. It’s the format video professionals use when they want to separate video from audio for authoring pipelines.

DVD authoring is the classic .m2v workflow. Tools like DVD Studio Pro, Encore, and most authoring suites accept .m2v video + .ac3 audio as separate streams and multiplex them into VOB files. Standalone .m2v files appear less frequently in consumer workflows but remain essential to post-production pipelines for disc mastering and broadcast delivery.
