Numbers shipped in iWork ’08 (August 2007) as Apple’s spreadsheet, launching in the same release that killed off AppleWorks. Apple’s design philosophy was radical: unlike Excel’s infinite grid, Numbers presented a canvas where each table was a movable object. You could have four small tables, a chart, and a photo on the same sheet like a magazine layout, not a battleship-size grid.
The file format went through two generations. Before iWork 2013, a .numbers file was a macOS bundle — a folder containing XML and media, disguised as a file. The 2013 rewrite made .numbers a ZIP archive holding IWA (iWork Archive) binary blobs, the same Protocol-Buffers-based format used by Keynote and Pages. That rewrite made files smaller and faster to open but completely opaque to non-Apple tools. Like its siblings, Numbers interops with Excel by exporting XLSX.
