RMVB — RealMedia Variable Bitrate — was RealNetworks’ 2003 answer to the MPEG-4 compression race. By using variable bitrate encoding, a RMVB file could deliver perceptible improvements on action-heavy content without inflating file size on dialogue-heavy stretches. In practice, RMVB became culturally synonymous with 2000s-era Chinese fan-subbed anime and Asian TV distribution online: much of the pirate scene in Asia used RMVB because it fit full episodes on smaller bandwidth pipes than DivX.

The file format itself is just RealMedia with VBR RealVideo 9 or 10 inside. When RealNetworks faded and H.264 proved superior at every bitrate, RMVB faded with the parent ecosystem. The extension still surfaces in Asian-language video archives from 2003-2010, but nobody creates new RMVB in 2026.
