SSA — SubStation Alpha — was created in 1996 by Kotus (real name withheld), a developer on Usenet anime forums, as a richer subtitle format than SubRip’s plain text. SSA introduced named styles (bold, italic, color, font, position), character-level formatting, and dialogue entries with timing and style references. Fansubbing groups adopted it almost immediately because Japanese-to-English subtitles needed typography SubRip couldn’t provide — stylized song lyrics, on-screen sign translations, multiple-speaker color coding.
SSA v4+ (1999-2001) added more features, and in 2002-2004 the community forked it into ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) with per-character animation, rotations, drop shadows, and karaoke effects. SSA is now legacy compared to its successor, but many older anime releases still use it and every modern player (VLC, mpv, Aegisub) reads both formats identically.
