About ZST Files
Zstandard Compressed
Zstandard (Zstd) is a fast lossless compression algorithm developed by Yann Collet at Facebook. It provides compression ratios comparable to zlib while being 3-5x faster at both compression and decompression, making it ideal for real-time data processing.

HOW ZST CAME TO BE.
Zstandard was announced by Facebook in 2016, designed by Yann Collet — the same engineer who had previously built LZ4. The design brief was pragmatic: compression ratios comparable to zlib/gzip but with dramatically faster speed, and an optional "high" mode that approached xz compression ratios while still being faster. zstd hit that target.
Adoption was rapid. The Linux kernel accepted zstd as a first-class compression algorithm in 2018. Arch Linux switched its package compression from xz to zstd in 2019 for faster installs. Btrfs, bcachefs, and ZFS all implemented zstd transparent compression. HTTP’s Content-Encoding header gained a `zstd` value in 2023. RFC 8478 standardized the format in 2018. In 2026 zstd is the "right answer" for most new compression needs outside of absolute-smallest-size use cases.

STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS.
Strengths
- Extremely fast decompression (~2 GB/s on modern CPU).
- Scalable: very fast at level 1, near-xz ratios at level 22.
- Dictionary support for small-payload efficiency.
- Multi-threaded by default.
- Standardized (RFC 8478), BSD-licensed reference.
Limitations
- Newer than gzip/bzip2 — some legacy tools still lack support.
- At extreme compression levels, xz can still win on ratio.
- Memory usage at high levels is significant.
- Consumer archiving tools (Windows Explorer) lag behind.
CURIOSITIES & TRIVIA.
Zstandard was developed by Yann Collet, the same engineer who created LZ4 — the fastest general-purpose compressor in common use.
Arch Linux switched from xz to zstd for package compression in 2019; installs became 2-3× faster without meaningful size increase.
zstd supports "dictionaries" — pre-trained compression state that makes small, similar payloads (like JSON API responses) compress dramatically better.
The Linux kernel itself can be zstd-compressed since 5.9 (2020), speeding up boot times on slow storage.
zstd --ultra -22 compression approaches xz ratios while decompressing 10-20× faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
ZST (Zstandard Compressed) is an archive format used to bundle multiple files and folders into a single compressed file. The archive preserves the directory structure and typically reduces total size via compression. ZST sits in the archives & compressed family and has specific strengths around compression ratio, speed, or platform support.
7-Zip, WinRAR, The Unarchiver (macOS), and the built-in archive utilities on Windows and macOS open most ZST files. For command-line extraction, 7z, unar, or the format-specific tool handles ZST cleanly. If your extractor does not recognise ZST, convert to ZIP first — ZIP opens on every operating system without extra software.
Upload the ZST to KaijuConverter and pick ZIP, 7Z, TAR.GZ, or RAR as the target. Our pipeline extracts the original archive and re-compresses the contents into the target format. File permissions, timestamps, and directory structure are preserved where both formats support them.
Depends on the goal. ZIP is the universal baseline — every OS extracts it out of the box. Formats like 7Z or TAR.GZ compress better but require specific tools. ZST may win on compression ratio, password support, or OS integration for specific workflows; ZIP wins on raw compatibility.
