Frequently Asked Questions

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML-based format used primarily to export and import podcast subscription lists and RSS feed collections. When you switch podcast apps — from Pocket Casts to Overcast, for example — you export an OPML file from the old app and import it into the new one to transfer all your subscriptions at once. RSS readers like Feedly and Inoreader use the same format for feed migration.

For long-term archiving choose <strong>FLAC</strong> (lossless, ~50% the size of WAV). For everyday listening on phones and streaming use <strong>MP3 320 kbps</strong> or <strong>Opus 192 kbps</strong> (transparent quality, no audible difference at normal volumes). Avoid converting lossy → lossy → lossy: every step compounds artifacts.

Yes. OPML is plain XML, so any text editor (VS Code, Notepad++, even Notepad) can open and edit it. The structure is straightforward: each podcast or feed is one <outline> element with a type="rss" attribute, a text/title display name, and an xmlUrl pointing to the actual feed URL. Be careful to escape special characters as XML entities (&amp; for &, &lt; for <) to keep the file valid.

Spoken-word podcasts: 44.1 kHz mono, 64–96 kbps Opus or 96 kbps MP3. Music podcasts: 44.1 kHz stereo, 128–192 kbps. Going above wastes bandwidth — speech has limited frequency content above 7 kHz, and listeners on data plans appreciate the smaller file. Apple Podcasts and Spotify both accept up to 48 kHz / 320 kbps.

The most common causes of OPML import failures are: (1) invalid XML — special characters like & or < in podcast names that are not properly escaped as &amp; or &lt;; (2) missing xmlUrl — outlines with type="rss" but no feed URL are silently skipped by most apps; (3) encoding issues — make sure the file is saved as UTF-8; (4) nesting depth — some apps do not support deeply nested folder hierarchies and flatten everything. Validate your OPML with an online XML validator before importing.

Lossy → lossy compounds quantization noise. Each encode discards the same kind of perceptual information again, multiplying artifacts. Always re-encode from a lossless master if you have one (WAV, FLAC, or the original recording). If only an MP3 is available, keep the bitrate at or above the source — never go up to "improve quality".

There is no formal size limit in the OPML specification. In practice, even a power user with 1,000 podcast subscriptions produces an OPML file well under 1 MB. Podcast apps and RSS readers handle files of this size instantly. The real-world limit is imposed by the importing application, and all major apps tested handle 500+ feeds without issue. OPML files compress extremely well (90%+ reduction with gzip) if you need to email or store them.

Most modern tools (FFmpeg with <code>-map_metadata 0</code>, foobar2000, dBpoweramp) preserve ID3 tags and embedded cover art. Some quick-and-dirty converters strip them silently. KaijuConverter preserves tags in its <a href="/convert/flac-to-mp3">audio conversions</a>; if metadata is critical to you, verify the output with <code>ffprobe</code> before deleting the original.
