Quality & Compatibility
Color is the sharpest loss. GIF uses an indexed palette of up to 256 entries per frame; the conversion engine must apply a dithering algorithm (Floyd-Steinberg is standard) to approximate colors that fall outside the chosen palette. Smooth gradients — skin tones, sky, lens blur — become visibly banded. Alpha transparency is supported in GIF but only as a binary on/off flag per pixel, not a continuous alpha channel, so semi-transparent edges from the source video will either be dropped or become hard-edged. Audio is discarded entirely — GIF has no audio specification. Bit depth is fixed at 8 bits per pixel (the palette index). Metadata from the AVI container — timestamps, codec identifiers, embedded subtitles — is not carried over. Frame rate is preserved only approximately: GIF frame delay is stored in centiseconds and rounded to integer values, so 29.97 fps source video cannot be represented exactly and is typically downsampled to 10–15 fps to keep file size manageable.
Tips for Best Results
- Keep the source clip under 8 seconds before converting. GIF file size scales linearly with duration because each frame is stored independently with LZW compression rather than the inter-frame delta encoding that makes video codecs efficient — a 30-second AVI clip can produce a GIF exceeding 50 MB even at low resolution.
- Reduce the output resolution to 480px wide or narrower before export. Because color quantization to 256 colors causes banding proportional to the number of pixels per frame, smaller frames look cleaner and compress far better. A 1080p source GIF will show worse banding than the same clip at 360p.
- Trim and crop the AVI to the exact moment you need before uploading. Every additional second and every extra pixel in the canvas adds disproportionate file weight — GIF has no keyframe system and stores full palette data per frame, so tight editorial choices before conversion produce a dramatically smaller and sharper result than cropping the GIF afterward.
