- Lossless and uncompressed — perfect bit-exact pixel storage.

Limitations
- Enormous file sizes — no meaningful compression in typical use.
- Not a web format — browsers support it but nobody serves BMPs over HTTP.
- No metadata support (no EXIF, no ICC profile in practice).
PSD Strengths
- Preserves every Photoshop feature: layers, masks, adjustments, smart objects, text, effects, styles.
- Backward-compatible — files from 1990 still open in modern Photoshop.
- Industry-standard handoff format between designers, agencies, and prepress.

Quality & Compatibility
BMP-to-PSD conversion does not change the visible content. Quality is capped by the BMP decode; re-encoding a lossy source at high quality cannot recover detail that was already discarded. For archival masters, keep the original BMP alongside the PSD copy.
Tips for Best Results
- Large BMP files may look identical to small PSD files for photographic content; pick quality based on end use, not headline megapixels.
- For print, export PSD at 300 DPI minimum and check that the colour profile embedded matches the print shop specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both BMP and PSD are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If PSD is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded BMP exactly, but cannot recover detail that BMP had already compressed away.
