HOW TO CONVERT CR3 → WEBP
Upload your CR3
Start by dropping the CR3 onto the uploader. Files up to 25 MB go through on the free tier without registration; paid plans go up to 2 GB.
Conversion happens server-side
Our imagemagick-based pipeline reads the CR3 pixel grid, preserves resolution and colour profile, and encodes a clean WEBP.

CR3 is Canon's newer RAW format used across modern EOS cameras. Reaching a WEBP from there is one hop. A CR3 to WEBP conversion is almost always about making an image land cleanly in another piece of software. Canon RAW CR3 is well-suited to its original niche, but WebP Image opens on more platforms or fits better into a publishing pipeline. Upload a CR3 file above, pick any quality knobs, and download a ready-to-use WEBP. One more beat. CR3 is Canon's newer RAW format used across modern EOS cameras. Receiving format: WebP is Google's modern image codec offering smaller files than JPEG and PNG at similar quality.
Why convert CR3 to WEBP
Converting keeps the picture recognisable end-to-end while changing the container that ships it. WEBP typically wins on one of three fronts: broader software support, smaller files for the same visual quality, or features like transparency that CR3 cannot express. The conversion itself is fast because both sides are raster formats.

CR3 vs WEBP — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
CR3 Strengths
- Modern ISO Base Media File Format container.
- Supports lossless + compressed C-RAW in the same extension.
- Preserves every pixel of Canon mirrorless sensors.
- Compatible with Canon's cross-camera pipeline (DPP, Cinema EOS).
Limitations
- Proprietary — no public spec.
- Third-party support is always playing catch-up with each new body.
- Older Canon processing software (DPP 4) does not read CR3.
WEBP Strengths
- Smaller file sizes than JPEG, PNG, and GIF at equivalent visual quality.
- Single format for lossy photos, lossless graphics, transparency, and animation.
- Full alpha channel support with smaller files than PNG.
- Now universally supported in all modern browsers.
- Open-source reference implementation (libwebp) by Google.
Limitations
- Some older software and image editors still don't read WebP natively.
- Max dimensions are 16,383 × 16,383 — lower than JPEG or PNG.
- Print workflows rarely support WebP (no CMYK, limited color management).
Quality & Compatibility
Converting keeps resolution, aspect ratio and colour profile identical to the source. Metadata (EXIF, XMP) transfers where WEBP supports it; otherwise it is dropped. If the CR3 contained an alpha channel and WEBP does not support transparency, the background is flattened to white by default.
Tips for Best Results
- When uploading to Retina / high-DPI contexts, render the WEBP at 2× the CSS pixel size; the crispness gap over 1× is noticeable on modern screens.
- Strip EXIF metadata from the WEBP before publishing if the CR3 came from a phone camera — it often contains GPS coordinates and device IDs.
- If the CR3 is a screenshot of text or UI, prefer a lossless WEBP target to avoid the JPEG-style ringing around glyph edges.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both CR3 and WEBP are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If WEBP is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded CR3 exactly, but cannot recover detail that CR3 had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when WEBP is lossless. CR3 tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than WEBP's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
KaijuConverter uploads over HTTPS, processes the image in an isolated container and deletes both the source and the output within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and we do not use uploads to train any model. For confidential material, the paid plan includes a data-processing agreement.
Canon RAW CR3
Source formatCR3 is the newer Canon RAW format used in EOS R mirrorless cameras and newer DSLRs. It offers improved compression and image quality over CR2.
WebP Image
Target formatWebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior lossless and lossy compression. Files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPEG or PNG images at the same visual quality.
Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send WEBP files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for CR3.
Embed in documents
Drop WEBP output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
WEBP often produces smaller files than CR3 for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
CR3 vs WEBP — Typical file sizes
Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.
- 24 MP CR3 lossless (R6, M50) 30-40 MB
- 45 MP CR3 lossless (R5) 45-60 MB
- 45 MP C-RAW compressed 25-35 MB
- Web photo (vs JPEG equivalent) 25–35% smaller
- Transparent logo (vs PNG) 20–30% smaller
- Animated replacement for GIF 60–80% smaller
