Convert animated GIF to efficient WebP
GIF was engineered in 1987 for a world of dial-up modems and 256-color palette displays. Its animation model stores each frame as a full or partial indexed bitmap, and the format's lossless LZW compression was designed around that 8-bit palette constraint — meaning a single animated GIF showing a gradient or photographic footage balloons in size because it must dither thousands of real colors into at most 256 entries per frame. WebP, developed by Google and released in 2010, was built to solve exactly this problem: it supports both lossless and lossy compression using VP8/VP8L intra-frame coding, carries a full 24-bit RGB color space plus an 8-bit alpha channel, and its animation container (WebP Extended File Format with ANIM and ANMF chunks) encodes each frame using the same VP8 prediction coding that makes static WebP so efficient. Converting an animated GIF to animated WebP typically reduces file size by 40 to 80 percent depending on color complexity, while simultaneously lifting the color ceiling from 256 to 16.7 million colors per frame. That size reduction is not theoretical: Google's own benchmark data from 2013 showed animated WebP files averaging 64 percent smaller than equivalent GIFs. For a modern web page where image payload directly affects Core Web Vitals LCP scores, this difference is load-bearing.
GIF Image
Source formatGIF supports animation and transparency with a 256-color palette. While limited in color depth, it remains the most universally supported animated image format across platforms and messaging apps.
WebP Image
Target formatWebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior lossless and lossy compression. Files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPEG or PNG images at the same visual quality.
Why convert GIF to WEBP
The dominant reason is bandwidth. An animated GIF of a screen recording, product demo, or meme-style loop routinely lands between 2 and 20 MB because each frame must approximate continuous color with a 256-entry palette, and LZW compression gains little when every frame differs. The same sequence encoded as animated WebP uses VP8 inter-frame prediction — later frames store only the delta from the previous one, like a video codec — achieving far smaller payloads. Beyond size, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Android WebView all support animated WebP natively since 2019 or earlier, making browser compatibility a non-issue for the vast majority of web traffic. Safari added full animated WebP support in version 14 (macOS Big Sur, iOS 14, released 2020), so the historical holdout is no longer a blocker for most production deployments.
HOW TO CONVERT
GIF → WEBP
Upload your GIF
Start by dropping the GIF onto the uploader. Files up to 25 MB go through on the free tier without registration; paid plans go up to 2 GB.
Conversion happens server-side
Our imagemagick-based pipeline reads the GIF pixel grid, preserves resolution and colour profile, and encodes a clean WEBP.

Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send WEBP files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for GIF.
Embed in documents
Drop WEBP output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
WEBP often produces smaller files than GIF for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
GIF vs WEBP — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
GIF Strengths
- Universal animation support — every browser, every chat app, every social network.
- Transparent backgrounds for compositing against any page color.
- Lossless for its limited palette — pixel-perfect at 256 colors.
- Self-contained: no codec, no browser plugin, no third-party player needed.
Limitations
- Limited to 256 colors per frame — looks posterized on photographs.
- Dithering for color-rich images makes files huge (often 10× an MP4 equivalent).
- No audio track.
WEBP Strengths
- Smaller file sizes than JPEG, PNG, and GIF at equivalent visual quality.
- Single format for lossy photos, lossless graphics, transparency, and animation.
- Full alpha channel support with smaller files than PNG.
- Now universally supported in all modern browsers.
- Open-source reference implementation (libwebp) by Google.
Limitations
- Some older software and image editors still don't read WebP natively.
- Max dimensions are 16,383 × 16,383 — lower than JPEG or PNG.
- Print workflows rarely support WebP (no CMYK, limited color management).

Quality & Compatibility
GIF uses lossless LZW compression but its quality ceiling is permanently capped at 8 bits per channel (indexed color, 256 palette entries). Any color detail above that threshold is already dithered and lost in the source file — conversion to WebP cannot recover it. What WebP conversion does preserve is the existing palette-accurate pixel data at full fidelity when using WebP lossless mode, or approximates it with controllable quality degradation in lossy mode. GIF's binary transparency (one color index can be flagged transparent, with no partial opacity) maps to WebP's full 8-bit alpha channel, but the result is still binary transparency unless the encoder explicitly blends edges, so semi-transparent halos are not added automatically. Frame timing metadata (GCE delay values in hundredths of a second) is carried across. ICC color profiles embedded in GIF (rare but possible) may or may not survive depending on the encoder. The loop count (Netscape Application Block in GIF) maps to the loop count field in the WebP ANIM chunk and is preserved by compliant converters.
Tips for Best Results
- Use lossy WebP at quality 75–85 for animated content with photographic gradients — this is where the largest size reduction occurs with no visible regression, since the GIF's existing dithering already masks fine detail. Lossless WebP mode is correct only when every frame is flat vector-style color with sharp edges.
- Verify the output frame count and timing before publishing: some encoders drop the last frame or round sub-10ms frame delays, which makes loops stutter. Run a quick sanity check with a WebP-capable viewer or browser DevTools before swapping the asset on a live page.
- For still GIFs (single-frame), conversion to WebP lossless is effectively free quality-wise and typically cuts size by 25–40 percent compared to GIF's LZW; lossy WebP at quality 80 can cut it further but introduces block artifacts on flat-color logos, so choose the mode based on the source content type.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the codecs involved. If both GIF and WEBP are lossy, the pixels are re-encoded and a small amount of detail is discarded — invisible at default quality settings on photographs. If WEBP is lossless (PNG, TIFF, BMP) the output keeps every pixel of the decoded GIF exactly, but cannot recover detail that GIF had already compressed away.
Often yes, especially when WEBP is lossless. GIF tuned for efficient web delivery will usually produce smaller files than WEBP's default settings. If file size matters, drop the quality in Advanced or pick a more compressed target format instead.
