Situation. DPX is a raster image format with its own balance of compression, colour depth, and software support. Solution: a PDF, produced below. A DPX to PDF conversion turns an image into a document. The pixel data is unchanged; it is simply placed on a page with margins, optional captions and a filename-based title. The result is a PDF you can print, sign, archive or send through document-only channels. Background. DPX is a raster image format with its own balance of compression, colour depth, and software support. Destination side, PDF is Adobe's Portable Document Format, the fixed-layout standard for shareable documents.

Digital Moving-Picture

Source format

DPX (Digital Picture Exchange) is a SMPTE standard file format for digital intermediate and visual effects work. It stores per-frame image data with rich metadata for color management and is widely used in film post-production pipelines.

Target format

PDF is the universal standard for sharing documents with consistent formatting across all devices and operating systems. It preserves fonts, images, and layout exactly as intended by the author.

DPX vs PDF — What's the difference?

Why convert DPX to PDF

A PDF carries metadata (author, date, title) that images lack. Document management systems index on those fields; sending a bare DPX means losing all that context by the time the file lands in search.

HOW TO CONVERT
DPX → PDF

1

Provide the DPX

Drag-and-drop an image up to 100 MB on the free tier. PNG, JPG, HEIC and WebP sources all work.

2

Wrap into PDF

We emit a PDF document with the image placed on a page, optional filename caption and preserved resolution.

3

Retrieve the output

Click to download; the PDF opens in any reader, prints consistently and can be signed digitally.

Common Use Cases

Medical record distribution

Clinicians send PDF-wrapped imaging DPX in patient records rather than raw image files.

Insurance claim uploads

Insurers accept PDF documentation of damage; your DPX photos get rejected or silently cropped.

Real estate listings

Agencies compile PDF brochures by page-boxing DPX property photos — one image per page.

Academic paper figures

Supplementary figures submitted as PDF alongside the main paper, each wrapping an original DPX.

DPX vs PDF — Strengths and limitations

What each format does best, and where it falls short.

DPX Strengths

  • Industry-standard archival format for film.
  • Logarithmic color encoding preserves film look.
  • Lossless — no generation degradation.
  • SMPTE standardized (SMPTE 268M).
  • Every VFX and color-grading app reads and writes DPX.

Limitations

  • No compression — file sizes are enormous.
  • Not a display format — requires color-managed pipelines.
  • Gradually superseded by OpenEXR in modern VFX.

PDF Strengths

  • Pixel-perfect fidelity across operating systems, browsers, and printers.
  • Embeds fonts, so documents render identically without the reader having them installed.
  • Supports digital signatures, encryption, and redaction for legal workflows.
  • ISO-standardized (ISO 32000) with multiple validated subsets (PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF/UA).
  • Supports both vector and raster content, keeping line art crisp at any zoom level.

Limitations

  • Editing is difficult — the format is optimized for display, not mutation.
  • Text extraction can scramble reading order in multi-column layouts.
  • File sizes balloon quickly when embedding high-resolution images or fonts.

DPX vs PDF — Technical specifications

DPX vs PDF — Typical file sizes

Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.

DPX

  • 2K DPX frame (2048×1556, 10-bit) ~12 MB
  • 4K DPX frame (4096×3112, 10-bit) ~50 MB
  • 90-min feature at 4K DPX sequence ~6 TB

PDF

  • 1-page text-only memo 50–150 KB
  • 10-page report with images 500 KB – 2 MB
  • Scanned document (per page) 100 KB – 1 MB
  • Full-color magazine (48 pages) 10–40 MB

Quality & Compatibility

DPI metadata from the DPX is used to compute the image's on-page size in the PDF. A 300-DPI photo of a 4x6 receipt lands as a 4x6-inch image on the page; override with "fit to page" in Advanced if you want it to fill the page instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 100 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.

Minimally. When the image encoding carries directly into the PDF (JPEG into PDF for example), pixels are stream-copied and quality is bit-exact. When re-encoding is required, we use high-quality defaults that are visually indistinguishable from the source on typical viewing conditions.

Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source DPX and the PDF output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.

Yes. Upload multiple images (or a ZIP) and the pipeline produces a multi-page PDF with one image per page, ordered by filename. Advanced options control page size, orientation per page and whether captions are inserted.

Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.

A4 portrait by default — the global mainstream. Switch to Letter or any custom dimensions in Advanced. You can also select "match image" so the PDF page size tracks the DPX aspect ratio exactly, eliminating white margins for custom printing.
