HEIF files are the default photo format on iPhone and iPad (iOS 11 and later), and Apple's macOS Ventura and later also default to it for screenshots saved with certain settings. The format stores photos using HEVC (H.265) intra-frame compression, which keeps file sizes 30 to 50 percent smaller than equivalent JPEG images at the same perceptual quality — a 4 MB JPEG typically becomes a 1.5 to 2 MB HEIF. That efficiency is the source of the compatibility problem: outside the Apple ecosystem, HEIF support is patchy. Windows 10 and 11 can display HEIF only after installing the Microsoft HEIF Image Extensions codec from the Store. Android support varies by version and vendor. Most email clients, web upload forms, and document workflows reject the extension outright. PDF, by contrast, is a final-form document container with universal read support across every major OS, browser, and mobile platform without plugins. Converting HEIF to PDF is the standard path when a user needs to send a photo to someone outside the Apple ecosystem and have it open without friction, or when attaching an image to a document workflow — insurance claims, medical records submissions, legal filings, rental applications — where PDF is the required or accepted format.

Why convert HEIF to PDF
The practical trigger is almost always compatibility or document submission. A HEIF image captured on an iPhone cannot be opened by a recipient on a Windows PC that lacks the optional Microsoft codec, and it cannot be embedded natively in most PDF creation tools or online form uploaders. Quality & Compatibility
HEIF stores the image with lossy HEVC compression and supports up to 16-bit color depth and wide color gamuts such as Display P3. When converted to PDF, the image is typically re-encoded as JPEG or stored as a lossless PNG tile inside the PDF container — the specific encoding depends on which tool performs the conversion. Kaijuconverter embeds the rasterized image; if JPEG encoding is used internally, there is a second generation of lossy compression applied, which is technically a quality cost though rarely visible at standard viewer magnifications. Color space is mapped to sRGB on output because PDF viewers without ICC profile support assume sRGB; any Display P3 or wide-gamut data present in the HEIF is clipped or tone-mapped. The HEIF EXIF block — capture timestamp, GPS coordinates, camera model, exposure settings — is not carried into the PDF document metadata by this conversion; the PDF will have a creation date but not the original shot metadata. Alpha channel (transparency), which HEIF supports for certain still images, is not preserved in a PDF image page.
Tips for Best Results
- If you are submitting the converted PDF to an institution that has a file size limit, be aware that embedding the image at full resolution inside a PDF can produce a file larger than the original HEIF, because HEIF's HEVC compression is more efficient than the JPEG encoding used inside most PDF containers. - HEIF files from iPhone often carry Display P3 color profile data, which produces more saturated reds and greens than sRGB.
