HOW TO CONVERT MTS → PNG
Provide the video
Select or drop a MTS file. The pipeline reads the header and figures out the frame timing.
Extract the still
We decode the requested frame at its native resolution and encode it as a PNG.
Save the image
Download the PNG. Original and output are auto-deleted within two hours.
Setup: MTS is the AVCHD camcorder variant of the MPEG transport stream. Goal: an interchangeable PNG. A MTS to PNG job turns a moving picture into a single image — perfect for thumbnails, documentation screenshots, or a hero still pulled from a longer clip. You can grab the first frame, the middle, a specific timecode, or every frame as a numbered batch. Keep in mind MTS is the AVCHD camcorder variant of the MPEG transport stream. And remember that PNG is the lossless image standard with alpha-channel transparency and deflate compression.
Why convert MTS to PNG
Image-only destinations like printed documents, favicons and email newsletters will reject MTS outright. Extracting to PNG unlocks those channels without asking you to cut and re-render the video in an NLE.

MTS vs PNG — Strengths and limitations
What each format does best, and where it falls short.
MTS Strengths
- Native format for every AVCHD camcorder since 2006.
- H.264 compression — small files for high-def quality.
- Direct compatibility with iMovie, Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut.
- Carries Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on flagship camcorders.
Limitations
- Slow to decode — editors typically transcode for editing.
- Proprietary folder-structure conventions complicate direct import.
- Largely legacy as smartphones replaced dedicated camcorders.
PNG Strengths
- Lossless compression — every save preserves the original pixels perfectly.
- Full 8-bit alpha channel for smooth transparency.
- Excellent for text, UI screenshots, logos, and line art.
- Royalty-free and an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 15948).
- Supports 16-bit color depth for high-fidelity work.
Limitations
- Much larger than JPEG for photographs (no perceptual compression).
- No native animation in most software (APNG support is inconsistent).
- No CMYK support — web and screen only, not print.
Quality & Compatibility
Colour rendering depends on the MTS video's colour space. BT.709 HD video and BT.2020 HDR content both map cleanly into a standard sRGB PNG; true HDR wide-gamut extraction requires the specific PNG formats that support it (JPEG XL, AVIF).
Tips for Best Results
- Use batch extraction when you need a contact sheet — one PNG every 5-10 seconds gives a readable overview of any MTS.
- Set Advanced → scale to target your destination pixel size once in the pipeline instead of resizing the PNG later in Photoshop.
- Keep the MTS alongside the PNG so you can redo the extraction with different settings without re-uploading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The free tier accepts files up to 25 MB without registration, email capture or watermarks; paid plans go up to 2 GB. Paid plans raise the size cap, enable batch conversions and provide a REST API for automation, but nothing on the free tier is quality-limited — the output is exactly the same as on any paid plan.
Yes. The Advanced panel accepts a timestamp in HH:MM:SS.mmm and FFmpeg seeks to that exact presentation time. You can also request the first, middle or last frame shortcuts, or a full batch (one PNG per second or per N frames).
Uploads run over HTTPS, files are processed in isolated containers, and both the source MTS and the PNG output are auto-deleted within two hours. No account is required, file contents are never logged, and KaijuConverter does not use uploads for AI training. The paid plan adds a signable data-processing agreement for regulated workflows.
Yes by default. The extracted frame is written at the same width and height as the source video. If you need a smaller image for the web, an Advanced "scale" option downsizes during the same pass so you do not have to re-encode twice.
Most files finish in well under a minute. Small images and documents are typically ready in a few seconds; large video or audio files scale roughly with duration. Upload speed from your network is usually the dominant factor, not server time.
Partially. We tone-map HDR MTS content back to SDR when the target PNG does not support wide-gamut. For proper HDR preservation pick a modern PNG that supports it natively (JPEG XL or AVIF) and leave "preserve HDR" enabled in Advanced.
AVCHD Video
Source formatMTS (AVCHD) is a high-definition video format from Sony and Panasonic camcorders.
PNG Image
Target formatPNG is a lossless image format that supports transparency. It is ideal for graphics, logos, screenshots, and any image where preserving exact pixel data is important.
Common Use Cases
Share across platforms
Send PNG files to anyone without worrying about whether they have the right software for MTS.
Embed in documents
Drop PNG output into Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, Notion or a website without conversion warnings.
Optimize size
PNG often produces smaller files than MTS for web, email and storage.
Archive & future-proof
Store in a widely-supported format that will still open on future operating systems without legacy plugins.
MTS vs PNG — Typical file sizes
Approximate file sizes for common scenarios.
- 1 min HD AVCHD (17 Mbps) ~130 MB
- 1 hour AVCHD Full HD ~8 GB
- Icon or small logo 2–20 KB
- UI screenshot (1920×1080) 200–800 KB
- High-res photo (12 MP) 10–30 MB
